Rotten Egg Smell

Is there is a rotten egg odor in your home? It just might be coming from your water.

High Manganese will often cause the water to smell like rotten eggs, however it the smell is can also be caused by elevated levels of hydrogen sulfide gas (H2S) in your water can cause rotten egg smell and worse. Hydrogen sulfide is actually a corrosive gas that can affect the taste of your food and accelerate corrosion on metal faucets and plumbing.

Since both of these issues require different filter systems to remove, it is important to do a full water test to help determine.

What is Manganese?

A common water issue in New Hampshire and Maine is high manganese. This causes black or brown stains and residue buildup on sinks, toilets, tubs and showers. Many people experience this problem with New Hampshire and Maine water wells alongside elevated iron levels.

Manganese in the water is natrual, and normal levels do not oppose a health risk, however recent studies show that exposure to high levels of manganese can affect the nervous system, impact reproduction, and damage kidneys.

What causes hydrogen sulfide gas (Sulfur) to form in groundwater?

Decay of organic matter such as vegetation, or chemical reactions with some sulfur-containing minerals in soil and rock, may naturally produce hydrogen sulfide in gas in groundwater. As groundwater moves through soil and rock formations containing sulfate, some material dissolves into the groundwater. A unique group of bacteria, called "sulfur bacteria" or "sulfate-reducing bacteria" then transforms sulfate and other sulfur containing compounds, including natural organic materials, to hydrogen sulfide gas.

Water pH levels are very significant in the removal of these elements, and depending on the pH, will also cause other issues especially when dealing with sulfur.
